'Dear John’ was a message in a bottle, a letter lovingly written in perfume to a long lost father who had disappeared into Africa in 1954 when his son was still a baby, and who had never come home. That baby was Mark Constantine OBE, the perfumer and entrepreneur at the head of the global high-street brand Lush Cosmetics, and the scented message was not seeking to end a relationship but to keep it alive...
Dear John: The Road to Pelindaba is the biography of Mark Constantine OBE, co-founder of ethical cosmetics giant Lush as told by his lifelong friend Jeff Osment. A powerful story of enduring friendship interwoven with an inspirational story of business tenacity and success, Dear John follows Mark’s story from his childhood in Weymouth and the disappearance of his father when he was just 2, through his troubled teenage years, failure at school, homelessness and on to global retail success.
An exploration of Mark’s ‘entrepreneur’s wound’; a drive to prove himself to the father he had never met, Dear John takes us on a journey from Mark’s fateful letter to Anita Roddick, founder of the then newly launched ‘The Body Shop’, to Mark’s role as their biggest supplier of product and the multimillion pound buyout, the subsequent failure of his mail-order business Cosmetics To Go and on to the creation of Lush, inventors of the bath bomb and billion pound global cruelty-free beauty retailer.
Set against Jeff’s secret search for Mark’s long-lost father and the unravelling of his family history; Dear John: The Road to Pelindaba is a story of friendship, loss, hope, innovation, principle and above all, tenacity.
Mark Constantine OBE was the biggest supplier to The Body Shop for a decade. After selling his innovative product formulas to them he founded mail order beauty business Cosmetics To Go - a massive success that collapsed through a combination of over-trading and flooding. From the demise however, he co-founded fresh handmade cosmetics brand,
Lush. It’s now a billion-pound business with over 900 shops worldwide. Mark is based in Poole, Dorset.
Jeff Osment is a retired filmmaker who has made over 300 films and videos for industry and business in a 40 year career, starting as a projectionist in a London advertising agency in 1972 and finishing as the creator and producer of Lush TV from 2006 until 2014. He has travelled all over the world on filming assignments and won international awards for his work. In 2015, he took early retirement and started writing.
Dear John: The Road to Pelindaba is his first book.
